This property, located on the North Shore of Kauai, is considered by many to be the most beautiful part of the Hawaiian Archipelago, boasting some of the cleanest air on earth. To reach the property, you take the charming two-lane Kuhio “Highway,” from Hanalei Town. The “highway” is bordered on one side by lush green mountains laced with shimmering waterfalls, and on the other side, by stretches of white sand and aquamarine seas. Crossing a series of picturesque one-lane bridges, you are transported back in time to an era of pristine beauty and tranquility. This is Haena, an area known for its natural splendor, peaceful ambience and rich history. Ha’ena, the exotic backdrop for countless films is serene yet rugged and epitomizes the spirit of “mana,” the power that emanates from sacred places. Many ancient Kauai legends are rooted here. Today, Ha’ena’s magic continues to inspire poets, photographers and artists of all kinds.
Life is slow in Ha’ena. That is part of the magic. No pressure, no hurries. This unique property is situated at the edge of Haena’s Limahuli Valley, a narrow valley framed by the soaring cliffs of Mt Makana and its surrounding peaks, the eastern side of the famous cliffs of the Na Pali coast. Born of volcanoes and isolated by thousands of miles of ocean, Limahuli Valley was surprisingly one of the first settlements on the Hawaiian Islands. The ancient Hawaiians, recognizing the exquisite relationship between mountains, ocean and the fresh water that connect them, developed a sophisticated resource management system that sustained the island’s ecosystem and provided for a relatively large and healthy population. The name limahuli which in Hawaiian means “turning hands,” aptly describes the agricultural activities of the early Hawaiians who, some 700 -1,000 years ago, “turned their hands” to create elaborate lava rock terraces for growing taro. These terraces still exist today.
Arriving at the property itself, you turn off Kuhio “Highway” onto an essentially invisible, jungle-lined, private road located across from the Limahuli Botanical Gardens, hidden between two of Kauai’s most famous beaches, Tunnels (snorkeling, swimming and surfing) and Ke’ee (snorkeling, swimming) and adjacent to thousands of acres of Hawaii State land. The few surrounding privately owned properties are discrete estates, well maintained by their famous and unknown owners.
Once on the property itself, it is almost impossible to choose which views are the most stunning: the broad and vast ocean vistas from its approximately 60 yards of coastline or the majestic views of emerald green Mt. Makana and its flowing waterfalls.
Mt Makana is the mythical mountain of Bali Hai featured in the film South Pacific. Makana, means “gift from heaven” a phrase that truly expresses the grand and perfect view of the mountain from this property. The ancient Hawaiians allowed only their Kahuna (priests) to climb its dangerously steep peaks where they would perform the sacred and spectacular Oahi, Fire Throwing Ceremony. The Oahi was reserved for festivals or the most special occasions and began in the afternoon with the Kahuna making the precarious trek up the shear sides of Makana carrying loads of extremely dry and hollow hau and papala logs. When night fell the Kahuna would torch the logs and launch them into the air toward the ocean. The winds would literally pick up the extra light flaming logs and carry them sometimes miles over the ocean displaying Hawaiian style-fire works with their rocket-like flames and burning embers floating across the sky. Those celebrating would sit in their kayaks and canoes waiting for the embers to fall and tried to catch them as souvenirs or to brand themselves as an everlasting memory of the day. Sadly, there is no a living person who has ever seen the Oahi. The last time the ceremony took place was upon the famous visit to Kauai by Queen Emma in (1870-1871). Shortly thereafter the Hawaiian monarchy was abolished; perhaps the soul of the ceremony vanished with the monarchy. Today, one can only feel privileged to stand on this property, imagine the splendor of the Oahi, reflect upon its meaning to the Hawaiian people and wonder if perhaps you are standing on the spot where one of the embers once fell.
The owners of this special property are not only stewards of the land but also of the rich tradition, culture and collective memories of the Hawaiian people.
There are no words or even photographs that fully convey the genuine magnificence of this property, one of the most beautiful places on this earth, a place of soulful healing and spiritual insights. One must personally visit to experience the mana, the power that emanates from this sacred place.
